Red Sox record on August 5th all-time: 59-47 (including tonight's loss).

The very first August 5th for Boston was a 1901 doubleheader in Baltimore against the Orioles, who would later become the New York Yankees. Cy Young dominated in game one, 3-1, but the MFO whitewashed us 9-0 in the second game. Also, the O's first baseman punched the umpire in the face.

"Cy Young, the Ancient Mariner of the Kiawash, was in gilt-edge form yesterday, and when Cy goes well he could set the pace for M. Santos Dumont's flying machine." --Baltimore American

(I don't get the Kiawash reference. I see there was a Native tribe called the Kiawah, but they lived in South Carolina.)
