I mean, for them to act like us going to the ALCS and the Yanks finishing third was somehow equal--that would be ridiculous in itself. But for them to make the claim BEFORE the series was over...after all the stuff they've seen, after seeing us win and then still posting the headline "See you in 2090" only to see us win AGAIN 83 years before their assumed date (predicting what will happen over the next 86 years--that's solid journalism!), that just put me over the top. Screw those guys. There HAVE to be plenty of Yankee fans saying "please stop making us look like fools, newspaper people." Right?
I walked into work grinning like an idiot. No one here is a baseball fan, but it was huge news in the papers anyway, so they knew.
Can you imagine if this was Game 7?
As it stands, the Rays can play the last three innings over and over and over in their minds today -- Maddon's non-assassin managing of his pen, Upton's bad outfield play and not stealing 3rd, Gross's total fuckups in right, E-van's bad throw -- and get even more shaky by Saturday night.
Meanwhile, Tito brings BOT into a 5-0 game with 2 on in the 7th.
Beckett knows the bats gave him a chance to pitch again -- and he should be in total kickass mode.
There HAVE to be plenty of Yankee fans saying "please stop making us look like fools, newspaper people."
Wouldn't expect journalism from the back of the Post or whatever tabloid.
Actually, there are a few Yankee fans in The Bar who are rooting for the Sox out of divisional loyalty. I find that kind of humbling, since some of my most intense fan experiences have been rooting against the Yankees (WS 2003 and especially 2001 Game 7...wow).

Other than Drew's GW RBI, you mean? I was leaving class after the game was over and the AM sports radio was on some totally partisan call-in show (I think they were calling the guy JT?) And he said that Gross may have taken a couple steps in before going back for Drew's liner. Watching the replay doesn't show me whether he did or not -- but the ball was fuckin' smoked, lined hard to deep right. I don't think I can fault Gross on that particular play.
Gross's throw home on Coco's hit looks like an intentional grounding from a quarterback. The ball was lined and he could not have gotten a better one-hop. From medium right, he practically spiked the ball. There was one other play, but I can't recall it. (And yeah, people said he broke in on Drew's hit. I'm not sure though. There were a few SoSHers at the game and sitting out there who commented in the link I posted in the earlier thread.)
I have been taping the games the old-fashioned way, on VHS tapes. Somewhere around the top of the 7th, I thought to myself, man, I'm NEVER gonna watch these fucking things again!!! :>)
It was weird having the TV on mute and listening to the radio, which was a bit ahead. We heard all the great stuff, then waited to see it "live". The more I think about it, the more I didn't like it. I think it took some of the excitement of seeing it as you are finding out about it.
I walked in with a shit-eating grin on my face too. Saw my manager, with whom we always discuss sports and gave him the big thumbs up. He was laughing as soon as he saw me walking in before we even looked at each other.
Everyone knows how amazing that was. I'm still in awe. I laughed myself to sleep last night.
We heard all the great stuff, then waited to see it "live". The more I think about it, the more I didn't like it.
There is one TV in The Bar that's on some kind of different feed; it's about 4 seconds ahead of the rest of them, including the one with the sound on. Maddening when some Sox fan decides he has to watch the TV that's faster -- you have no choice but to watch it as well, because of his early reactions. Annoying.
I've been on the phone with my brother in Colorado, and he's some 8-9 seconds ahead.
The thing that's nice about the sound in The Bar is that if it were loud enough to hear the announcers well, then the commercials would be deafening. So you can't really hear what they're saying, but you still get the crowd noise, the sound of bats hittings balls, and things like that.
I think I may have gotten some mojo for the sox last night, too. Down seven nothing, and I popped "Faith Rewarded into my computer, muted the game, and played it. xD
The Sporting News ran an item on its blog this morning on a Boston Globe poll which indicated close to 60 percent of Red Sox fans went to bed while their team trailed 7-0 in Game 5.
Remember J.D. Drew's reputation when he got to Boston? A sluggy unclutch wimp?
He erased some of that last year with the granny, but after this year, with his super clutch AL player of the month June, top of the ninth HR against Frod, and last night, he shouldn't be remembered except one of the best clutch players in baseball.
And when he was interviewed about 45 seconds after getting the game-winning hit, he was so calm, like he had done nothing more exciting than drop a letter in a mailbox.
His shrugging shoulders and demeanor reminded me of Manny. Same perfect mindset for baseball.
I have heard baseball fans refer to the "sweet swing" and was often not sure what they were talking about. But I think Drew's got it. It looks effortless. It's discouraging when he swings and misses, because it seems like he's just waving at the ball.
I'm glad he's around. He's as much the reason as anyone that we're in the freakin' playoffs, given the way he batted in June.
I have trouble embracing Drew. "Hate" is far too strong a word for it but I wish he wasn't so minor-injury prone and, over all, I have been disappointed in him since he came to the Sox. I guess part of the problem is he shows these flashes of brilliance like last night and then when he goes back to being pretty ordinary for long periods of time or getting hurt in some minor way which keeps him out of the lineup when the Sox need his bat it's extra frustrating because it seems like he is capable of so much more.
Maybe I just have to lower my expectations of him a bit. Awesome, performances like last night make that hard to do though :)
I hope it's a sign of things to come...without Manny and Lowell the Sox need Drew to step up more than ever...
I can see you being mad at that "Comin' To Join You Yanks!" garbage, but on another level it's kind of funny that in trying to poke fun of the Sox they are once again drawing attention to the greater futility of the 3rd place $200 million Yanks.
