OBP = O, Big Papi

(The numbers in this post were wrong. I have fixed them.)

As I mentioned earlier, David Ortiz has an .889 on-base percentage in the playoffs this year (16-for-18), but his hot streak at the plate actually goes back to September 21 -- right after the Red Sox were swept in Toronto.

Since that dismal three-game series, Ortiz has reached base in 39 of 54 plate appearances (.722 OBP) and 29 of his last 34 (.853).

Times on base in bold:
0921 @TB: K 1B 1B K HR
0922 @TB: 2B 43 F7 K BB
0923 @TB: BB 43 1B 43
0925 Oak: BB F9 BB F7 HR
0926 Oak: P4 BB 1B 2B 2B
0927 Min: 2B 1B HR 1B BB
0928 Min: 2B 1B 43 HR
0929 Min:
0930 Min: K BB K
1003 DS1: 1B HR BB F8
1005 DS2: 1B BB BB BB BB
1007 DS3: K HR BB 1B
1012 CS1: 1B HBP BB BB 2B
The 29-for-34 breaks down to:
12 walks
7 singles
5 doubles
4 home runs
1 hit by pitch
5 outs
That's a batting line of .762/.828/1.571 for a 2.424 OPS.

I think it's actually 39 of 54 (0.722 OBP). I counted twice. What a streak, either way!

Don't you mean 16 for 18, my friend?

It's been a treat to watch his at-bats. A couple of times, he swung wildly at a tough lefty slider out of the zone (one from CC, one in an earlier game, i forget from whom), and then proceeded to completely ignore the pitch when thrown again later in the at-bat. Very impressive. It's like he recognizes it without trouble the next times...

In addition, is it just me, or has Papi as of a couple months ago seemed to open his eyes wider than usual at the plate? it's less pronounced now, but it seemed like he started mashing the ball pretty much right when he seemed to have his eyes wider. anyone notice this? I could be crazy...actually I am, but you know what I mean.

Man, I'm making typos and errors right and left. 11-for-13 was before last night. Should be fixed now. Sigh.

Heh, no worries. Just be happy it's you having the bad go of it and not the Red Sox.
